Software-Defined Imaging: A Survey

Huge advancements have been made over the years in terms of modern image-sensing hardware and visual computing algorithms (e.g., computer vision, image processing, computational photography). However, to this day, there still exists a current gap between software design an imaging system, which silos one research domain from another. Bridging is key unlocking new capabilities for end applications commercial photography, industrial inspection, robotics. In survey, we explore existing works literature that can be leveraged replace conventional components system with enhanced reconfigurability. As result, user program sensor way best suited application. We refer as software-defined (SDI), where behavior altered by depending on user’s needs. The scope our survey covers systems single-image capture, multi-image, burst well video. review related primitives, signal processor (ISP) pipeline, architecture, operating elements SDI stack. Finally, outline infrastructure resources systems, also discuss possible future directions field.
